About the artist Arthur Erwin:

At the age of six, Arthur discovered the miracle of the pencil. He started sketching on everything from paper, newsprint, his homework, even using chalk on the sidewalks. His artistic talent became more and more evident year by year.

One day in January 1987, he purchased a 35mm camera from a local pawnshop and discovered his new love of photography. Soon there were more lenses, filters, motor drives, flash units and another camera body. A couple of classes and many books later, there was a black and white darkroom in his spare bedroom.

About ten years later he decided he needed a change and New Orleans sounded good. He sold his photography equipment, packed up and left Dallas. New Orleans really appealed to his artistic sensibilities so he started an experimental photograph series using disposable cameras and drug store enlargers with some incredible results.

Eight years later he decided to return to Dallas, a decision that made his family extremely happy. Shortly thereafter, he purchased his first digital camera which opened up a whole new world of photography and he has never looked back.

The bulk of his work involves nature. Within a three minute walk from his home, there is the west bank of a large lake which lends itself to nice sunrises. Also as the water level rises and falls, many interesting things are revealed. He also developed a fascination with the coral honeysuckle flower which grew in an old hedgerow behind the building where he worked. He photographed it every spring for about six years. Being a self-taught musician, he also likes to photograph musical instruments, man-made vintage objects such as trains, and Gabrielle his parrot.

Over the last year he has started to rethink his approach, getting away from traditional composition and concentrating on the smaller and more interesting parts of the image, zooming in to the point of abstraction, verging on illustration rather than reportage.

We are very excited that Arthur has decided to share his incredible work with the world. With his varied array of photographs from literal to abstract, you are sure to find the one that speaks to your heart.
